BEST OF ASTRALAFRICA

This "mega-mix" was an attempt to create my personal "essence of afro-funky-sound". Released as a 60min tape in spring 1995. Mixed with two +-30%-manipulated-technics 1210 turntables, a vestax mixer, recorded on DAT. Afterwards I cheated: the first two-turntable-mixdown was overdubbed with beats, vocals, melodies, scratches and so on and re-recorded on tape. No computer editing. Just solid vinyl mixing.

It took me several weeks to select the songs and samples, to check out the order, to find the matching mixes. Some songs are far away of being easy to mix. The problem for me was that I had to do the whole 30 minutes-mix (for each side of the tape) in one go, because I could not edit or cut the mix later on DAT or tape. And I wanted it to sound "perfectly mixed". So I had countless tries for a perfect mix. Most of the tries I failed e.g. at minute 26... *!?!*. Start again.... It never happened to be "the-perfect-30-minutes mixdown", some mixes are still not perfect.

No matter, most of the songs still would be in my "all time favourites list" if I had one (it would be a book). Beyond that it reminds me of a good time in the early 1990ies, friends, holidays in italy, legendary parties in strange locations and a variety of music-styles mixed together, that influenced my whole life as a record collector and dj.

My name is Florian Venus. I collect records since I was a child. In 1986 I started doing mix-tapes for friends.
